April 21, 1649 Passed in accordance with instructions from Lord Baltimore, this document protected Maryland from the charge of intolerance toward Protestants. The Toleration Act 1688, also referred to as the Act of Toleration, was an Act of the Parliament of England, which received the royal assent on 24 May 1689. The Act allowed freedom of worship to nonconformists who had pledged to the oaths of Allegiance and Supremacy and rejected transubstantiation, i.e., Protestants who dissented from the Church of England such as Baptists, Congregationalists or English Presbyterians, but not to Roman Catholics. Nonconformists were allowed their Equestrian statue of Prince William of Orange (1845) on a high pedestal. The Toleration Act of 1689 was an act of the English Parliament that had provisions for the freedom of worship for Nonconformists (dissenting Protestants who did not abide by the Church of England). Because of their refusal to take oaths, refusal to own slaves, and their refusal to participate in war, they were targeted the most. From being deported out of the colony, fined, or jailed, they were seen as the most threatening by the establishment. It wasn’t until the Act of Toleration in May 1689 that the seeds of change were planted.
